A former detective lieutenant with the Lincoln Township, Mich., Police Department has pleaded no contest to falsifying a totaled vehicle inspection, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced.
Johnathan Chase, 54, of Stevensville, pleaded guilty to one count of misconduct in office and one count of false certification.
“We trust law enforcement to protect our communities and not abuse their authority,” Attorney General Nessel said. “By falsifying these inspections, this officer endangered public safety by placing unvalidated vehicles on our roadways. I am proud of the force team and the Michigan State Police for securing this conviction and holding him accountable.”
Conduct scrap vehicle inspections to ensure that vehicles that have been severely damaged or rebuilt with parts from other sources are safe and that their parts cannot be traced to stolen vehicles. Officials conducting these inspections must certify the origin of all parts. Chase, the only officer within the Lincoln Township Police Department responsible for certifying salvage vehicles, submitted multiple falsified salvage vehicle inspection forms to the Michigan Department of State.
