The California Legislature voted to amend a child sexual abuse law that extends the statute of limitations for claims, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The law has led to a large number of lawsuits and has been criticized for the financial strain it places on districts.
For example, Los Angeles County alone has agreed to pay nearly $5 billion to settle more than 11,000 claims since the law was enacted, according to the Times.
The changes passed Sunday are now headed to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk. They would require survivors over the age of 40 to provide proof that they knew of the misconduct and did not try to prevent it, the Times reported.
