Akron, Ohio, officials fired a police officer who fatally shot a 15-year-old boy, while announcing the city had agreed to pay $4.75 million to the teen’s family.
The settlement, which still requires a judge’s approval, came after the family filed a lawsuit against the city.
Police said Jazmir Tucker was armed with a loaded weapon when he was shot in November 2024. They said two officers heard gunshots and later spotted Tucker and chased him, with one firing multiple shots.
Akron Mayor Shamas Malik said Officer Davon Fields was fired for multiple policy violations, including failing to properly provide medical assistance and violating the department’s policy on body cameras. The mayor also cited other issues related to another criminal charge involving Fields.
“The human toll and circumstances in this case were absolutely tragic and resulted in tremendous human and financial losses,” Malik said in a statement. “We have a responsibility to make policy changes that reduce the likelihood of cases like this occurring in the future.”
The head of the Akron police union called the firing unfair and said the officer was used as a “political scapegoat.” Brian Lucey, president of the local Fraternal Order of Police, said the union plans to boycott the firings.
About a year ago, a grand jury decided not to indict the officer.
Weeks after the shooting, Akron’s mayor said body camera video of the shooting raised questions, including why officers didn’t turn on their cameras immediately and why it took so long to provide first aid.
In the video, the shooting officer’s arm and gun block the camera’s view, blurring the moments before Tucker is shot. Another officer’s camera recorded the officer unzipping the injured teen’s jacket pocket and pulling out a handgun.
